E-Scooter Inquiry Launched by UK Transport Committee: Urban Landscape Changing?

The UK's Transport Committee is investigating the feasibility of legalising electric scooters on British roads.

Currently, the UK is the only major European economy where e-scooters are banned, except for use on private land.

E-scooters have become a popular urban transport option in more than 100 cities globally.

The committee's investigation will examine the potential benefits of e-scooters, such as reducing congestion and promoting sustainable transport, against safety risks.

The inquiry will also consider whether the current legislation for e-scooters is up to date and appropriate, and will examine the experiences of countries where e-scooters are legal on roads.

“The chair of the Transport Committee, Huw Merriman MP - These ‘powered transporters’ could reduce the amount of time we spend in cars and reduce congestion but we don’t want to score an own goal by encouraging the use of micromobility vehicles instead of walking and cycling.”
