Transport for London (TfL) has launched a competition to select up to three operators to participate in a year-long trial of electric scooter rentals in the capital, due to start in spring 2021.

A third of London's boroughs have expressed interest in the scheme, with up to 150 e-scooters per borough set to be tested.

Rental scooters will be permitted on roads and cycle lanes but not pavements, with "go slow" areas limiting speed.

E-scooters will remain illegal for private use on public roads and pavements, with fines of up to £300 and six points on driving licences.

“TfL today launched a competition to select up to three operators to take part. The rental scooters will be able to be used on the road and in cycle lanes but not on pavements – effectively mirroring the “rules of the road” for cyclists.

Privately owned e-scooters will remain illegal to use on public roads and pavements, with riders at risk of a £300 fixed penalty notice and six points on their driving licence if stopped by police.”
