The Transport Committee of MPs in the UK has called for the legalization of e-scooters on roads, but with a ban on riding them on pavements.

Currently, privately-owned e-scooters can only be used on private land in the UK. The committee believes e-scooters could provide a green alternative to cars and has suggested that official trials should be used to monitor collisions.

The committee recommends that local authorities determine e-scooter speeds and that users should be encouraged to wear helmets.

Rental e-scooter trials have been announced in several locations in England, though a trial in Coventry was paused due to concerns about pedestrian safety.

”Committee chair Huw Merriman said: "E-scooters have the potential to become an exciting and ingenious way to navigate our streets and get from place to place.
If this gets people out of the car, reducing congestion and exercising in the open air, then even better.””
